Thomas Shafer earned a Master of Architecture with Distinction, from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design where he also received the Appleton Traveling Fellowship for Academic Excellence. Previously, he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, where he was selected as both a Luce and a Rhodes Scholar finalist. Shafer has held senior design roles at prominent firms such as Kohn Pedersen Fox in NYC, and Lohan Associates in Chicago. He established Shafer Architects PC in 1991, later co-founded Grunsfeld Shafer Architects LLC in 2001, and is currently the Managing Partner and Principal in charge of Design at Shafer Crowe | Architecture + Design LLC.
 
An advocate for architectural education, Shafer has served as a thesis advisor and studio professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology and as a visiting critic at prestigious universities. Active in civic and professional organizations, he has served on boards and committees, including the North Shore Country Day School and Highland Park Historic Preservation Commission. He also helped reinvigorate and then chaired the Chicago AIA Custom Residential Architecture Network. He remains dedicated to mentoring, community engagement, and advancing architecture through thoughtful design and dialogue.

KATHY SHAFER, AIA

Kathy graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a B.S. in Economics and Sociology. She began her career at Drexel Burnham Lambert on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange. While working at the CBOE, she pursued an M.B.A. at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, graduating with a focus on Finance and Management.
 
Kathy joined First Chicago in sales and trading, rotating through various groups before settling on the Forward Trading Desk of Foreign Exchange, eventually becoming First Vice President and Head of Forward Trading. She later led institutional marketing for North America.
 
In 1998, she joined Shafer Architects, where she manages financial and marketing operations and assists with interior material selections.
 
Active in scientific, civic and educational efforts, Kathy serves as President of the GI Research Foundation Board for the University of Chicago Digestive Diseases Medical Center and previously led PTO initiatives benefiting Highland Park and underserved schools. She has also volunteered as a docent for Facing History and Ourselves and served on the Board of Governors and Capital Projects Committee at Lake Shore Country Club.

Scott earned his Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design, where his work was featured in the Publication of Student Works. He graduated as the top-ranking student in North Carolina State University’s architecture program, receiving the Henry Adams Medal and AIA School Award.
 
Previously, Scott held key roles at Peter Forbes and Associates in Boston and firms in North Carolina, designing corporate headquarters, academic buildings, and award-winning residential projects. An active AIA member since 1988, he serves as the CRAN Chicago steering committee chair, mentors architectural interns, and has participated on juries at top architecture schools. Scott is a founding board member of Maxwell Street Community Garden and remains involved in urban redevelopment near his Chicago home, where he enjoys cooking, gardening, and spending time with his family.

BEN KUECK, AIA

Ben earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. While there, he participated in the UARK Design Build Program, designing and constructing two modular houses in central Arkansas. One project earned an Arkansas AIA Honor Award, and the other received a Merit Award. Ben served as project manager during his senior year, with these designs contributing to the revitalization of Pettaway Park in Little Rock.
 
Previously, he was an Intern Architect and Project Manager at James R. Childers Architect, Inc. in Fort Smith, AR. Ben’s experience spans design, project management, and construction across residential, healthcare, and institutional projects.

LISA KULISEK, AIA

Lisa earned a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design, focusing her thesis on Detroit’s historic Michigan Central Railroad Depot. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Michigan.
 
Lisa joined Shafer Crowe Kueck | Architecture + Design after 16 years in solo practice specializing in residential renovation and construction observation. Previously, she was a Project Architect at Tigerman McCurry Architects for ten years, becoming an Associate in 2001. Lisa contributed to award-winning single-family residences and served as Project Manager for notable projects, including the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center (Illinois’ first LEED Gold-certified museum) and the International Masonry Institute Training Center.
 
Lisa is a past president of Chicago Women in Architecture, the nation’s oldest professional organization for women in architecture.

Dan received a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Colgate University.
 
Dan is a licensed architect in the state of Illinois. Dan joined Shafer Crowe Kueck | Architecure + Design LLC as a Project Architect. Prior to joining SCK, Dan worked for Ballinger LLC as a Junior Architect, where he contributed to numerous projects in the healthcare and higher education sectors.

Previously, Maddox worked as an Intern Architect for Studio Gang in Chicago, IL and Cromwell Architects Engineers in Little Rock, AR.
