Thomas earned a Master of Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design with Distinction and received the Appleton Traveling Fellowship for Academic Excellence. His work is featured in Harvard’s Design Archives. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, where he was a Luce and Rhodes Scholar finalist. Thomas has held senior design roles at Kohn Pedersen Fox and Lohan Associates. In 1991, he founded Shafer Architects and later co-founded Grunsfeld Shafer Architects (today Shafer Crowe | Architecture + design.)
An advocate for architectural education, Thomas has served as a thesis advisor and studio professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology and as a visiting critic at universities. Active in civic and professional organizations, he has served on boards and committees, including the North Shore Country Day School and Highland Park Historic Preservation Commission. A passionate cyclist, Thomas participates in charitable rides. He remains dedicated to mentoring, community engagement, and advancing architecture.

Kathy graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a B.S. in Economics and Sociology. She began her career at Drexel Burnham Lambert on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange, as a broker. She has her M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, in Finance and Management.
Kathy joined First Chicago in sales and trading, landing on the Foreign Exchange Forward Trading Desk, eventually becoming First Vice President. In 1998, she joined Shafer Architects (now SC|A+d.) She manages financial and marketing operations and assists with interior material selections.
Active in civic and educational efforts, Kathy serves as President of the GI Research Foundation Board at the University of Chicago and previously led PTO initiatives benefiting Highland Park and underserved schools. She has volunteered as a docent for Facing History and Ourselves and served on the Board of Governors at Lake Shore Country Club.

Scott earned his Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design, where his work was featured in the Publication of Student Works. He graduated as the top-ranking student in North Carolina State University’s architecture program, receiving the Henry Adams Medal and AIA School Award.
Since joining the firm in 1998, Scott has led design efforts for residential projects across the country. He is the Senior Technical Architect and Principal.
Previously, Scott held key roles at Peter Forbes and Associates in Boston and firms in North Carolina. He served on the CRAN Chicago steering committee and currently is a member of the AIA National CRAN committee. He mentors architectural interns, and has participated on juries at top architecture schools. Scott is a founding board member of Maxwell Street Community Garden and remains involved in urban redevelopment near his Chicago home, where he enjoys cooking, gardening, and spending time with his family.

David received a Bachelor of Architecture from the Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design with a Minor in History of Architecture.
David joined Shafer Crowe | Architecture + design as an Architectural Designer. Prior to joining SC|A+d, David worked for Civic Projects Architecture as an Architectural Designer. Previously, David interned at Marlon Blackwell Architects in Fayetteville Arkansas.
His passion for architecture began with his love for drawing and cities. When deciding what to study in school, he realized architecture was the perfect subject. As a designer he is interested in the capacity of architecture to create dignified experiences for those who engage with it.
He grew up through out the United States and has lived in Illinois, Colorado, Arkansas, and New York, but Chicago has always been home. When he is not at work, he likes to enjoy all that Chicago has to offer culinarily and culturally.

Lisa earned a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Michigan, where she participated in the inaugural Czech Spring Studio, studying residential architecture and large “panelak” buildings.
Lisa joined Shafer Crowe | Architecture + design after sixteen years in solo practice specializing in residential renovation and construction observation. Previously, she was a Project Architect at Tigerman McCurry Architects for ten years, becoming an Associate. Lisa contributed to award-winning single-family residences and served as Project Manager for notable projects, including the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center (Illinois’ first LEED Gold-certified museum) and the International Masonry Institute Training Center.
NCARB certified and licensed in Illinois and Michigan, Lisa has been an AIA member since 2001. She is a past president of Chicago Women in Architecture. Her extensive experience spans architectural design, project management, and construction observation on diverse projects.

Dan received a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Colgate University. He enjoys the challenging process of turning ideas into reality and seeing the finished product improve the lives of its users.
Dan joined Shafer Crowe | Architecture + Design as a Project Architect and is now an Associate of the firm. Prior to joining SC|A+d, he worked for Ballinger LLC as a Junior Architect, where he contributed to numerous projects in the healthcare and higher education sectors. Dan is a licensed architect in the state of Illinois.
Raised in the Chicago area, he spent several years studying and working in Philadelphia before returning. Today, Dan lives in the city with his wife and two cats. On the weekends, you will find him playing golf or tinkering with his 3d printer.

Prior to joining SC|A+d, Maddox worked for Multistudio in Kansas City as an Architectural Associate, where he contributed to numerous projects in the civic and education sectors. Previously, Maddox worked as an Intern Architect for Studio Gang in Chicago, IL and Cromwell Architects Engineers in Little Rock, AR.
Originally from Bentonville, Arkansas, Maddox is a new resident of Chicago and enjoys exploring the city, photographing good architecture, and trying new restaurants.

Sydney graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Production, specializing in Scenic Design, with a double minor in French and Communication Design from Sam Fox School of Design. During her last two years of college, she interned and worked freelance for an event production company in St. Louis. Through these experiences, she ensures that all aspects of her design communicate with each other.
Sydney joined Shafer Crowe | Architecture + Design after six years in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. While out west, she worked in interior design, marketing, and branding for WRJ Design.
Sydney is a member of the Marketing + Communication Committee for the GI Research Foundation at the University of Chicago, contributing her design and marketing expertise to support their mission. Outside of work, you can find Sydney strolling her neighborhood with Stevie.
